Sketch for You
“The work in Sketch improves the quality of design.”
We are happy to present our new article concerning Sketch. Mary from our team was pleasant to take a minute and talk about one of the most popular programs among designers. So let’s find out, what are the advantages of Sketch.
The low barrier of entrance.
The first and the most valuable property of Sketch is the low barrier of
entrance. It takes two or three days for a newbie, in case you have a new member in your team. To educate a newbie is a very simple process. He needs to know basic tools. And then it takes about month to improve other skills in Sketch. That’s why Sketch gives us the profit in speed with no loss of quality.
The other value of Sketch is the absence of useless tools. A lot of stuff were chopped off. For example, as a comparison we can take a Photoshop. This editor is oriented on many tasks and includes blocks for editing, tech design and even 3D design. If we take Sketch, it doesn’t include all the above listed tools. Only the design of mobile applications. All the tools are focused on that. And for this reason Sketch is more aimed for UI/UX design. We can test our prototypes directly on the devices. We can see the design in that way, in which the user will see.
What is more, in Sketch you can see the toolbar with the most necessary tools for transferring the design to the developer.
Conceptual designing process.
The third advantage of Sketch is the designing process which is the most conceptual. We can compare it with an artist. When he draws on the canvas, he doesn’t begin his work from the corner. He begins from the general to the particular. Firstly, he paints big spots, then he detalizes them. In this case he doesn’t lose the consistency of the composition and can always correct some global mistakes in the very beginning. So it prevents the occurrence of local errors. The same happens during designing in Sketch.
We work with design from general to particular. We start with the global composition of the art-boards. For example, we select colours, if they are suitable. Firstly we thrash out low detailed prototypes. Then we work with highly detailed prototypes. The main thing is that we don’t need to redraw. Formerly, designers had only several tools for design creation. They began with sketching low detailed prototypes by their hands. Then they made highly detailed prototypes in Axure. And then these highly detailed UI prototypes designed in any graphic editor. For example, in Photoshop.
Sketch allows to move from one phase to another without changing a tool, and most importantly without remaking anything. We can create low detailed prototypes and then detail them. After, we can take highly detailed prototypes and colour them. And all these processes will be in one layout.
Be a designer, think like developer.
Another important peculiarity of Sketch it’s the possibility not to duplicate things. When we work with an art-board, we are closely approaching to the programmer’s work, who builds the interface of basic components.
Then there is the development. Sketch is closely connected to the development. We create the basic components. Here is the same app, presented on different devices with various content.
That means every card contains own identification. If we would work in Photoshop, we had to make four screens and make big amount of cards in each screen. And all of these elements wouldn’t be connected with each other. If we would like to change something, we would have to change it separately. Here’s the another advantage of Sketch. It allows to create one basis, in which we establish the rules, peculiarities, size, shift, then we duplicate it on different devices, test it and check it, and also can easily change, thus reducing the error price.
“The lower cost of failure, the higher price of the design.”
Designer is not afraid to correct himself. Designer is not afraid of corrections from the customer. He always improves his design, makes it perfect. The work in Sketch improves the quality of design.
Redesign in Sketch.
Sketch makes the process of redesign much easier. For example, we use the font Open Sans. Sketch allows you to have a complex work and to identify key components. Program makes the redesign process so much easy, because firstly it identifies key components and then start building pages from these components.
Plugins and Future.
Sketch is the dynamically evolving product. It is renewing almost every week. Essentially nothing is changed. Nevertheless, for designers, who start learning Sketch now, will be much easier to get used to all its features. Moreover, program accretes with plugins. These plugins are created by famous Zeplin, Invision and other small one. There are several most popular plugins for Sketch: Craft and Zeplin. Pay your attention to these plugins.
Sketch is directly oriented on UI/UX design. You can create an interface in two days. Sketch is completely the vector editor. So it moves towards new tendencies. Sketch deals with any kind of interface. Moreover, you can zoom it in any way you want.
Let’s talk a bit about animations. For these goals I advice to use a program called Principle. Every interface, created in Sketch, is transferred into Principle. In this program we animate everything what we need.
